Job Description


AZZ Specialty Welding

General Description:

The Prototype Specialist will be responsible for the fabrication and delivery of internally manufactured components in the AZZ Specialty Welding machine shop.  In addition, the Prototype Specialist will assist, as needed, in the design of components used by engineering and maintenance.  Assistance can include design consulting (conceptual and design for manufacturability), creating models and drawings using SolidWorks, and converting old drawings into SolidWorks files.  This position can be a pathway to an engineering position in the mechanical design department.

Education, Certifications, Licenses & Registrations:

Technical degree in machining, manufacturing technology or related topic or working equivalent, with supervisory skills.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be capable of operating common hand tools.
  • Must be capable of reading mechanical manufacturing drawings.
  • Must be proficient at operating manual and numerical control (NC) machines (mill, lathe, grinder, etc).
  • Must be proficient in the programming and operation of Haas CNC machining centers.
  • Must be capable of using Solidworks to draw and import solid models for CNC part programming.  The ability to use SolidCAM CAM software is a plus.
  • Must have good math skills.
  • Must be capable of using a wide variety of measuring equipment.
  • Must be capable of working under own initiative.
  • Must be capable of directing the activities of more junior machinist.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist in managing the work flow through the machine shop based on priorities set by machine shop supervisor and with input from key stakeholders.
    • Assist in determining the need to outsource and process accordingly.
      • Assist in prepare RFP’s and reviewing quotes.
      • Assist in generating RFQ’s for outsourced work.
      • Assist in managing vendor due dates and quality of work.
      • Arrange couriers as needed to pick up and deliver parts.
    • Create accurate estimates from engineering drawings for in-house parts.
    • Part fabrication costs.
    • Specialized tooling costs if required.
    • Communicate to in-house customer's status changes of part delivery and cost as needed.
  • Assist in the direction of machine shop personnel.
    • Assist in providing tasking to more junior machinists.
    • Serve as technical mentor for more junior machinists.
    • Provide input into performance reviews of more junior machinists.
    • Recommend machinist training and maintain training records.
  • Assist in the management of machine shop practices.
    • Create and maintain a “safety first” working environment.
    • Create appropriate standard working practices and procedures.
  • Operate Machine tools as needed.
    • Operate all manual machines.
    • Operate all NC machines.
    • Program in SolidCAM, operate CNC machine.
    • Troubleshoot issues as needed for equipment.
  • Manage machine shop tooling, equipment, raw materials.
    • Manage consumable tooling and budget.
    • Manage equipment maintenance and budget.
    • Order/stock/manage raw material as needed for in house and vendor use.
    • Manage all gage equipment calibration certificates.
  • Prototype consulting and design.
    • Prepare dxf/pdf files for use by in-house or outside machine shops.
    • Design and manufacture tooling fixtures as needed for fabrication or assembly.
    • Create models and drawings from sketches and/or actual parts so that items can be manufactured.
    • Create models of electrical control panels for use in fabrication.
    • Create detail drawings of models generated from engineering.
    • Design tooling and components for engineering and maintenance.
    • Convert old 2-D drawings to 3-D SolidWorks files.

Physical Demands:

Able to lift 50 lbs. Available to work shift work; night shift, day shift or swing shift. Able to perform duties in PPE.   Exposure to extremely noisy areas, confined spaces, elevated areas, extreme temperatures and humidity, climb vertical ladders up to 100’.  Strong possible exposure to radiological, chemical, petroleum lead, biohazard, dangerous vapors and gases, molten metal’s and electrical hazards.

Work Environment:

Shop floor and/or climate controlled office environment.
