Job Description


Under general supervision of the Design Supervisor, the Electrical Designer follows instructions and procedures, performs moderate design of layouts for electrical circuits or systems for power distribution. Performs drafting duties by operating Computer Aided Design (CAD) equipment such as digitizers, plotters, CRT's, and associated peripheral equipment and software. Prepares clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detailed drawings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (other duties may be assigned):

1. Identifies factors affecting project design by using information provided by the engineer.

2. Uses knowledge of manufacturing methods, materials, etc., in developing designs.

3. Confers with other departments as necessary to ensure integrity and manufacturability.

4. Designs or develops layouts for electrical circuits or systems for power distribution.

5. Creates detailed schematics. Creates and edits drawings using current AutoCAD software.

6. Forwards drawings to engineer for preliminary review; make changes and corrections as needed before being sent to customer for approval.

7. Notifies engineer of any updates to bill of material as drawings are developed.

8. Ensures accuracy of work by checking materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and of various parts to the entire project.

9. Notifies the appropriate personnel when other activities are ready to be performed during the design process e.g. material updates, design checks, etc.

10. Forwards final checked drawings to engineers

11. Acknowledges and understands and follows Switchgear’s established standards and makes improvements.

12. Assists in creating standards for improvement in efficiency.


A. Education/Experience: Minimum requirements of two (2) years working knowledge of electrical schematics and a Vocational Certificate in Drafting, or 2 years of work experience using current AutoCAD software. Associates degree in drafting is preferred.

B. Knowledge/Skills: Must be able to use current AutoCAD software in an accurate and efficient manner, and be able to read and interpret drawings. Requires basic knowledge of electrical equipment and circuitry.

C. Equipment Used: General office equipment (computer, printer, fax, telephone, copier, etc.)

D. Certificates, licenses, and registrations: None

E. Language Skills: Able to read and interpret specifications and business correspondence. Able to respond to inquiries and communicate information in a professional manner

F. Mathematical Skills: Able to perform calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division) using fractions, decimals, and whole numbers. Able to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry to practical situations.

G. Reasoning Ability: Able to collect data, establish facts, define problems, and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

H. Attendance Requirement: Regular attendance during office hours plus overtime as required.

I. Travel Requirement: None

J. Physical Demands: Office position, primarily sedentary. Spends at least 2/3 of time seated, talking/hearing, reading, and using hands & fingers. Generally requires clear vision at 20 inches or less (for detailing prints, reading, writing, etc.). Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday. Proper lifting techniques required. May include lifting up to 25 pounds for files, computer printouts, etc.

K. Work Environment: Spends over 3/4 of time in a temperature-controlled office with a moderate noise level, and less than ¼ of time in heated (but not air-conditioned) production area with moderate to loud noise levels. Personal protective equipment as needed.
