General Description:

The Director, Human Resources is responsible for the management, administration and coordination of the human resources (HR), employee relations (ER), and training, recruiting, security, safety and workers compensation functions.  Plans, directs, and promotes the overall efficiency and effectiveness of human resources programs and strategies (e.g., recruitment and retention, employee relations and collective bargaining, performance management and compensation, benefits, and training and development). This position works in consistent collaboration and partnership with the AZZ corporate HR functions to ensure consistency in Mission, Vision and policy application.


Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience required. 5 years of management experience required.   Senior Professional of Human Resources (SPHR) or Professional of Human Resources (PHR) preferred. A valid driver’s license required.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have advanced knowledge and professional specialization in the principles, practices and techniques of labor relations, human resources management, organization and employee development, succession planning, recruitment and selection, salary administration, benefits, civil rights and equal employment opportunity and group process facilitation.  Working knowledge of human resources information systems (HRIS).  Must have advanced labor relations skills to conduct complex labor negotiations, deliver education to small groups, influence the behavior of groups and individuals and display unique sensitivity to a diverse population of current and prospective employees. Must have special skills in training, team building, facilitating problem-solving and grievance procedures and conducting internal investigations. Ability to organize, plan, develop and write new programs, develop new concepts, analyze supporting data and prepare clear and concise reports.  Ability to develop and maintain a productive employer/employee relations program. Ability to counsel staff, direct and facilitate development of personal and team perspectives, develop training programs and deliver training.

Essential Duties:

  • Plans, directs and manages all HR initiatives; recruitment, compensation, benefits, training, labor relations and employee relations for the platform.

  • Ensures policies, procedures and HR programs are consistently administered, aligned with organizational goals and in compliance with standards, state and federal regulatory requirements and laws.

  • Directs, facilitates and presides in collective bargaining processes as a principle negotiator, spokesperson and contract administrator for the company.

  • Develops and recommends business and cost strategies, policies, rules and other contract provisions.

  • Coaches managers and other staff on policy, contractual matters (e.g. grievances and other complaints, disciplinary and investigations and performance evaluation processes).

  • Directs and conducts internal investigation and ensures compliance with state, federal, local laws, labor contracts, and AZZ company policies.

  • Directs and manages the safety policies, procedures, budget, legal compliance and staff for the division including but not limited to: workers compensation, employee safety, and OSHA procedures.

  • Collaborates with the Corporate HR team and other business partner organizations to ensure the attainment of the AZZ Mission, Core Values and organizational initiatives.

  • Works with Talent Management to develop strategic programs for leadership, personal development and skills training at all levels.

  • Develops and facilitates process improvement strategies and initiatives for departments, plant operations and senior leadership that incorporates HR cost effective best practices.

  • Collaborates with Corporate HR shared services teams in the development and implementation human resources services and systems for organizational effectiveness.

  • Develops, manages, and reports on key metrics that support cost management improvements for HR, Safety and employee performance management in business units.

  • Manages HR budget and ensures cost initiatives are within approved guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision of HR professionals and administrative staff

Up to 60% required (International travel as needed).
